A FORMER police officer is due in court charged with "misconduct" in a public office following an investigation into alleged social media misuse.

In the 2015 the Chief Constable George Hamilton asked the Police Ombudsman to investigate the actions of the female PSNI officer who, at the time, was based at a station in east Belfast.

The officer was suspended from her post while the investigation into the alleged online activity took place. The woman, aged in her 50s, has since retired from the organisation.

After the ombudsman concluded its investigation a file was passed to the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) for consideration.

A spokesperson for the PPS said yesterday: "We can confirm that following careful consideration of an investigation file submitted by the Police Ombudsman a decision has been taken to prosecute a former PSNI officer for the offence of misconduct in public office.

"As court proceedings will shortly commence we would ask that there is no reporting or commentary which would in any way prejudice these proceedings".

A summons is expected to be issued to the defendant in the coming weeks.
