Police investigate link to Ballysillan attacks

Police have increased patrols in the Ballysillan area following a spate of attacks.
Police have increased patrols in the Ballysillan area following a spate of attacks.

A series of attacks on homes and vehicles in the Ballysillan area of north Belfast are believed to be linked to the same criminal gang, who are attempting to intimidate a number of families from their homes.

There have been five separate attacks to date, with the PSNI saying they have increased their presence in the area.

The attacks are not believed to be either sectarian or racist and have targeted families with no paramilitary or criminal connections.

On Tuesday windows were smashed in a house belonging to a mother and her two young children and a van was set on fire.

Inspector Laura Kelly said: "We are currently investigating recent incidents of houses being damaged and vehicles being set alight in the Ballysillan area of north Belfast over the last fortnight.

"While thankfully we have not received reports of any injuries in relation to these incidents, damaging properties and setting fire to vehicles is not only incredibly dangerous but is also creating fear in the local community. This is unacceptable.

"We have increased patrolling in the area and are liaising with the local community, partner agencies and local representatives.

"We are currently investigating each of these incidents to determine if they are linked and are following a number of lines of enquiry."

People Before Profit representative Fiona Ferguson said it was clear the attacks are connected and called for the "senseless violence" to end.
