Lidl is to start selling a robotic vacuum cleaner made by German firm Vileda, as it looks to enter the smart home retail world.

The Cleaning Robot will go on sale from August 12 for £79.99, significantly less than most robot vacuums which can cost upwards of £300.

The device contains an intelligent navigation system based around sensors that help the robot move around the house avoiding obstacles, as well as avoiding stairs.

Josie Stone, Lidl UK’s head non-food buying said: “At Lidl we’re always looking to provide affordable and innovative solutions that make customer’s lives a little easier.

“The Vileda Cleaning Robot is a fantastic gadget that takes all of the effort out of cleaning and taps into the trend of high-tech solutions that help customers save time looking after the home.”

The new robot will come with a two-year warranty and be available in the supermarket’s stores from Sunday.
