Saoirse Ronan and Michael Fassbender on Golden Globes shortlist

SAOIRSE Ronan, Michael Fassbender and the cast of Game of Thrones are set to do battle for gongs at the Golden Globe Awards next year.

Irish-Canadian screenwriter Emma Donoghue and Irish-Amerian writer and director Tom McCarthy are also set to do battle for the awards which will be presented at the Beverly Hilton on January 10.

Ronan, who was grew up in the Republic, has been nominated for best actress in a motion picture drama for her turn in Brooklyn.

She is up against Cate Blanchett in Carol; Brie Larson in Room; Rooney Mara in Carol and Alicia Vikander in The Danish Girl. Fassbender, whose mother is from Larne, Co Antrim, has been nominated in the best actor in a motion picture drama for his performance as Steve Jobs.

He is up against Bryan Cranston in Trumbo; Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant; Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl and Will Smith in Concussion.

Meanwhile, Dublin-born Donoghue's work on Room has been nominated for best motion picture.

Her work is up against other films including Carol, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant.

Room has also been nominated in the best motion picture screenplay alongside Charles Randolph and Adam McKay for The Big Short; Aaron Sorkin for Steve Jobs and Quentin Tarantino for The Hateful Eight.

Also nominated in the category is Irish Amerian screenwriter McCarthy and Josh Singer for Spotlight

Spotlight centres around The Boston Globe's Spotlight team, the oldest continually operating newspaper investigative unit in the US.

In 2001, a team of journalists from uncovered child sex abuse by Catholic priests in Massachusetts and an ongoing cover-up by the Boston Archdiocese.

McCarthy, also nominated in the best director category, faces competition from Todd Haynes for Carol; Alejandro Inarritu for The Revenant; George Miller for Mad Max and Ridley Scott for The Martian.

Meanwhile, Game of Thrones, who is currently being filmed at various locations across Northern Ireland is in line for the best drama TV series gong.

It is nominated alongside Empire, Mr. Robot, Narcos and Outlander.
