Obama banters with Clinton after joining Twitter

US President Barack Obama has only sent three tweets since he got his own Twitter account yesterday – but one of them was a playful exchange with former president Bill Clinton.

Clinton asked Obama whether the new @POTUS (President of the United States) social media account would stay with whoever was next in office.

Welcome to @Twitter, @POTUS! One question: Does that username stay with the office? #askingforafriend

Clinton, whose Democratic Party wife Hillary is running for president in the 2016 US elections, added the cheeky hashtag #askingforafriend.

I'm running for president. Everyday Americans need a champion, and I want to be that champion. –H https://t.co/w8Hoe1pbtC

Obama confirmed the Twitter handle would be inherited by the next president and jokingly asked: “Know anyone interested in @FLOTUS?”

Good question, @billclinton. The handle comes with the house. Know anyone interested in @FLOTUS?

The FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) Twitter account is run by White House officials on behalf of his wife Michelle.

He was either joking that he needed a replacement for his wife, or, a more likely meaning was he was poking fun at Bill, who could be the husband of the first female president, if Hillary wins.

Obama’s new account is for tweets exclusively from him after years of tweets written on behalf of him White House officials from the @BarackObama account.

Here is his first tweet.

Hello, Twitter! It's Barack. Really! Six years in, they're finally giving me my own account.

We’ll be watching this account for more political banter.
