A MURDER inquiry has been launched after a 21-year-old English GAA player was found with head injuries outside a house in Co Mayo.

Joseph Deacy, from St Albans, was found at Gortnasillagh, Swinford, on Saturday.

A passer-by raised the alarm after Mr Deacy was discovered at about 6am.

He was taken to hospital in Mayo and was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where he died on Sunday.

Gardaí launched a murder probe yesterday following the results of a post-mortem examination.

It is understood Mr Deacy had been on holiday.

St Colmcille's GAC in Hertfordshire, where Mr Deacy was a member, said he will be "sorely missed".

In a statement, the club said: "At 21 years of age, Joe had a bright future ahead of him".

"He had an amazing energy and a real lust for life," it said.

"He was a great friend and people were drawn to his character, his humour and outlook on life."
