RENT payments in the Republic are now more expensive than they were during the boom years of the Celtic Tiger.

According to the property website Daft, the average monthly rent is at its highest level on record.

Across the Republic, rents have risen an average of almost 4% in the second quarter of 2016.

The highest increase in rent has been in Cork city, where prices are 18% more than a year ago.

Rent in Dublin has jumped 11% in 12 months, the most expensive since 2014 and 5% higher than in the peak of early 2008.

The number of properties available to rent throughout the Republic has dropped dramatically from 11,000 in 2012 to just over 3,600 this year.

Economist with Daft.ie, Ronan Lyons, told RTÉ: "The solution is to get new homes built as that will address the underlying problem which is a lack of homes."
