Baby found at Co Wicklow recycling plant was a little girl

GARDI have confirmed that the remains of a newborn baby girl were discovered at a recycling plant in Bray.

A post mortem is to be conducted on the child's remains on Thursday, but the Guard leading the investigation has appealed to the mother to make herself known as she may be in need of medical assistance.

"I am very concerned for the welfare of the mum of this baby as she is possibly in a distressed state and in need of medical assistance. I would please ask for the mum to seek immediate medical treatment," said Superintendent Pat Ward.

"I am available here at Bray Garda Station to help the mum and Dad of this baby girl and if they would contact me or Sergeant Sorcha Fitzpatrick here at Bray Garda Station we will deal with any contact with us discreetly and sensitively.

"We don’t know what exactly happened leading up to the birth of the baby. However, it is possible that the baby was still born and if this is the case my priority now is to get all medical assistance and support to the babies mum”.

The body of the new born baby girl has been removed to Loughlinstown Hospital where the post mortem will be conducted by the state pathologist Dr. Marie Cassidy,

An incident room has been established at Bray Garda Station and Gardai are liaising with the Health Service Executive.

The Garda Technical Bureau and the State Pathologist Dr. Marie Cassidy have also attended the Recycling Centre.

Superintendent Ward appealed for information.
