SINGER Frances Black is to stand as an independent candidate for the Seanad.

The Dublin-born musician, whose father Kevin was originally from Rathlin Island off Co Antrim, said she wants to act as a voice for the vulnerable in society.

Ms Black is the founder of the Rise Foundation which supports families who have a loved one struggling with an alcohol, drug or gambling problem.

Announcing her candidacy, Ms Black said: "I believe a society should be judged by how it treats its people, whether they be impacted by addiction, suicide or mental health issues, or are disabled, sick, homeless or elderly".

Her nomination has been endorsed by Sr Stan Kennedy, founder of homeless charity Focus Ireland.
