A Garda inspector fatally injured after a bomb exploded on the Fermanagh-Cavan border will be awarded the highest honour for members of the force.

Inspector Samuel Donegan, 61, died after a crate he and members of the Defence Forces were inspecting exploded near Wattlebridge, several miles from Newtownbutler in Co Fermanagh.

Inspector Donegan, who joined the Garda aged 23, will be awarded the Gold Scott medal. He is among 11 gardai to be awarded Scott medals for bravery on Friday.

Detective Garda Daniel Kelleher will receive a Bronze Scott Medal. He was shot and seriously injured while escorting businessman Don Tidey, kidnaped by the IRA, to safety in 1983.

Inspector Donegan joined the Garda in 1934 and was promoted to sergeant in 1952. He served in Mayo and Sligo before being promoted to Inspector in 1967. He was transferred to Cavan.

On June 8, 1972, Inspector Donegan was leading a joint Garda, defence forces patrol on the Drumboghanagh Road when the crate exploded.

Sergeant Andrew O'Connor, Detective Garda Niall Minnock and Garda Conor Garland were all awarded a Silver Scott Medal.

In 2019 in Ballymun, Derek Devoy fired shots in Ballymun. It was the middle of the day and then gardaí when they were called to the scene.

After running into a home and still armed with a gun and a grenade, the three gardaí followed and managed to arrest him.

Sergeant Edward Griffin, Detective Garda Darren Carter, Detective Garda Enda Jennings and Garda Louis Browne will all receive a Silver Scott medal, following their actions arresting a man in 2020.

A court heard Stephen Dowling from Co Carlow was a deerhunter on alcohol and cocaine when he went on a shooting rampage with a high-powered rifle in Co Donegal. The four gardaí arrested him in Glenties despite coming under fire.

Sergeant PJ Gallagher and Garda Thomas McGuiness are to receive a Bronze Scott Medal. They were forced into the boot of a car by a gang at gunpoint in Co Sligo, in 1983, but managed to free themselves and raise the alarm.
