The family of a north Belfast man who died after a suspected drugs overdose has warned other young people with addictions to seek help.

Father-of-one Kieran McGrandles (30) and another man, aged in his twenties, died at a property in the Elgin Street area of south Belfast, which is off the Ormeau Road, on Friday May 5.

The deaths come just months after a similar double tragedy at nearby Annadale Crescent.

Twins Claire and Stevie O'Neill, both aged 37, were found unconscious at a house at Annadale Crescent area in February.

Mr McGrandles, who was originally from Ardoyne, had a troubled past and was gripped by addiction when he died.

His uncle Seamus McAloran last night said the young man's parents Kieran and Geraldine have been left heartbroken by their loss.

"They are totally wrecked," he said.

"He was much loved, his family took him in, helped him, he did rehab a couple of times."

Mr McAloran praised his nephew's generous nature.

"He was the loveliest wee lad growing up and had a heart of gold even through the drugs," he said.

"He was a very sentimental wee lad and loved his parents.

"He just was a nice wee lad and he took the wrong turn on the road basically."

Mr McGrandles graduated to hard drugs after smoking cannabis while still at school, according to his uncle.

"It's like the same old tale you hear all the time, you hear people saying the blow is harmless and all the rest of it but it's a gateway to other drugs," he said.

"He started at secondary school, smoking the blow, and just went downhill after it."

Mr McAloran said his nephew tried to shake the deadly addiction.

"He did rehab a couple of times, he didn't want to be on it.

"The last night I spoke to him he was pleading with me, 'I want to get off this, I have ruined people's lives, my life'.

"He talked about his young kid.

"But the help's not really out there to be quiet honest.

"You get so much help, you get brought into hostels and you are just put back on the street again."

Mr McAloran revealed that on the last night he spoke to his nephew he later overdosed.

"It would have broke your heart talking to this wee lad because he knew the damage that was doing to his family, to his friends to his relatives, everybody.

"But it just had a hold on him."

Mr McAloran said Mr McGrandles parents want to warn other young people "to please try to get help even though the help is not the best.

"If this could save another life or put somebody on the right road."

"Please, please try to get help."

A spokesman for the PSNI said: “Police in South Belfast are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of two men at a property in the Elgin Street area on Friday May 5.

“A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a number of drugs offences.

“He has been released on bail to allow for further police enquiries.”
