Residents of a Co Antrim town say they have complained for some time about the lack of safe crossings in the area where a man in an electric wheelchair was fatally injured in a crash last week.

The man died four days after he was struck by a vehicle on the Milltown Road in Ballymoney on Wednesday. It is an area that has seen significant growth in the number of houses and increased traffic but, locals says, little investment in infrastructure or pedestrian safety.

Residents of the town said complaints have been made about the stretch of road on the southern edge of the town. There are no pedestrian crossings on that section of the road despite the increase in population and traffic.

They took to social media, with one  describing how he has "complained constantly over the years about this area".

"They constantly give planning permission to build yet more houses at that end of town with no thought to the infrastructure," the resident said.

"How long before a kid or worse a mum with a pram just further up by the bridge is hurt."

A Department for Infrastructure spokesperson said: “Every road death is tragic and the Department extends sincere sympathies to the family of the man who sadly died in Ballymoney.

"There is no history of road traffic collisions at this area. However, as with all fatal collisions we will liaise with the PSNI to assist them with their investigation and will consider any identified actions for the Department to take forward.”

Other residents called for action, including a slow down in the number of houses being built around the Milltown Road, Finvoy Road area of the town. Investment should be made in the roads and in pedestrian crossings to catch up with the growth, he sai.

Others described the road as a "nightmare" and warned of more fatalities unless something is done.

The PSNI's Collision Investigation Unit is appealing for information following the fatal road traffic collision.

Meanwhile the Department for Instrastructure has been contacted.
