Health and safety investigation underway after Co Tyrone farm death

AN investigation is underway by the Health and Safety Executive following the death of a 65-year-old man in a suspected farming accident in Co Tyrone.

Dairy farmer Peter McCaughey died following the incident at his Altnaveigh Road farm in Augher on Tuesday evening.

It is understood the incident involved a loading machine at the premises.

A PSNI spokesperson confirmed they received a report of the death on Tuesday.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been informed," the spokesperson said

A HSE spokesperson told the Irish News they were "making enquiries into an incident which took place in the Augher area...to establish the facts.”

Sinn Féin councillor for the Cloghher Valley area, Sean McGuigan, said: "This is a tragic loss to his family and the community, and my thoughts are with his loved ones at this incredibly difficult time."

In a statement posted to social media Augher GAA club An Eochair Naomh Mhic Artain paid tribute to Mr McCaughey, describing him as a "valued member of the community and a great neighbour and friend to many within the club".

"He was a gentleman who will be sorely missed," a spokesperson for the club said.

"Peter's brother Brian is a current committee member and former chairman. His sons Ronan, Sean and Brian all played youth football in the club over the years."

A death notice for Mr McCaughhey said his loss was "very deeply regretted by his sorrowing wife, sons, daughter, daughters-in-law Clare, Roisin and Louise, his brother Brian, sisters Breige, Teresa, Gemma, Eithne, Bernie, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, grandchildren Martha, Albert, Felix and Molly and entire family circle."

A funeral for Mr McCaughey will take place on Monday at St. Macartan’s Church, Augher, before burial at the adjoining cemetery.
