IRELAND’S first ever academic seminar on the age-old problem of hangovers has taken place in Donegal.

A panel of international experts met to discuss the condition at Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT)yesterday.

Speakers included Dr Joris Verster, the founder of the Alcohol Hangover Research Group. A co-author of 266 articles and chapters on the issue, Dr Verster is considered one of the world’s leading experts on the condition.

Postdoctoral researcher, Dr Lydia Devenney, who hosted the event, said the seminar offered strong insights into the implications of alcohol-induced hangovers.

Dr Devenney said the health and safety risks were "substantial and far reaching" but said the area of hangover research isn’t as developed as many others in health research.

“Research in the area of alcohol tends to focus more on dependency than the effects of a hangover and a relatively small volume of research has been dedicated to understanding its biological, psychological and physiological consequences.”
