MORE than £1 million is to be spent enhancing shop fronts on two of Derry’s main city centre thoroughfares.

Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey said the money would help Derry’s long term economic viability and would assist businesses as they recovered from the coronavirus pandemic.

Up to 87 commercial properties are to benefit from the £1.14m which has been awarded to Derry and Strabane council to revitalise the Carlisle Road and Spencer Road areas.

“This investment will help local businesses improve their shop facades, making city centre shopping in Derry more appealing,” Ms Hargey said.

Derry and Strabane mayor Graham Warke said the investment would help the retail and hospitality sectors.

“This investment will also improve the look and feel of both areas, enhancing the physical presentation of these important commercial streetscapes to make them more attractive to the benefit of businesses and shoppers/visitors,” Mr Warke said.

The work is expected to be completed by late next year.
