Tyrone have pulled out of their All-Ireland Football semi-final against Kerry next weekend after a number of players contracted Covid-19.

As things stand, Kerry will automatically go forward to face either Dublin or Mayo in the final on September 4.

In a statement released today, Tyrone's county board said it had made the decision after receiving "expert medical opinion on the existing, and future health and welfare of the players who contracted the Covid-19 virus during the period of this last two weeks".

Following Tyrone's announcement, the GAA could offer the county an additional postponement to ensure the semi-final takes place.

The GAA could be out of pocket by around €1m if the tie is forfeited.

It is understood several panel members tested positive while others are self-isolating as close contacts of confirmed cases.

The Irish News understands several senior players have been struck down.

Sources say that one member has lost a stone in weight while others have been bed bound.

Training sessions have taken place but around one-third of players have been missing.

It is understood there were strong exchanges at a county board meeting on Thursday over the body's handling of the crisis.

It is believed that questions were asked as to why Red Hand officials didn't immediately appeal the GAA's six-day postponement.

A spokesman for the Tyrone county board declined to comment when contacted.

The GAA at Croke Park was also asked last night if it took medical advice before deciding to postpone the game for six days.

It did not respond.

This morning, the Tyrone GAA Management Committee has decided that it is not in a position to field its senior football team in the rescheduled All-Ireland football championship semi-final in Croke Park, on next Saturday.

Having received expert medical opinion on the existing, and future health and welfare of the players who contracted the Covid-19 virus during the period of this last two weeks, and following consultation with the team’s management, this decision has been made with the greatest reluctance, and with deep regret.

It is acknowledged that the decision taken will cause major disappointment and significant inconvenience for the Association, in general, the GAA fraternity of Kerry, and especially for Tyrone’s patrons and supporters, but the welfare and safety of players has been the over-riding factor in all considerations of this difficult situation.
