A 31-year-old man has been arrested following a robbery in Newtownards.

Police received a report on Tuesday morning that a man had threatened staff at a shop on East Street with a knife before making off with a sum of cash.

The incident occurred shortly before 8.20am, and just before 9.20am, another report was received that a man had produced a knife at another store on Regent Street where he demanded cash, but made off empty handed.

Police say a man was arrested on suspicion of offences including robbery, attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence. He remained in custody last night assisting police with enquiries.

Appealing for witnesses to contact police, a PSNI spokesperson added: "Thankfully, no staff were physically injured as a result of these distressing incidents."
