A MAN and a woman are being treated in hospital after they were injured in a two-vehicle collision in west Belfast today.

Police said the crash happened on Upper Springfield Road shortly before noon. It is understood one of the cars involved landed in a nearby field.

The route was closed for a time with diversions in place at the junction with the Tornaroy Road and Divis Road.

A PSNI spokeswoman said officers attended the scene, as well as the Fire and Rescue Service and Ambulance Service.

"A man and a woman, both aged in their fifties, were taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries, not believed to be life-threatening at this time," she said.

"Anyone who was in the area at the time or who has dashcam footage should contact police on 101."

It is understood the crash happened close to the entrance to a road which leads to the National Trust walk of Divis and Black Mountain.

It comes after a senior police officer had urged people to not gather in crowds at beauty spots and beaches during St Patrick's Day.

PSNI assistant chief constable Alan Todd said yesterday that while police wanted people to enjoy the day, "we need them to do that in a safe manner, stay at home if possible, stay in their social bubbles and don't go beyond that".

"Where they are going out, we would like them not to flock to beauty spots and resorts where if everybody does that...... it will be a challenge for us all and the wider community," he said.
