ANOTHER two people in Northern Ireland have died after contracting coronavirus, according to the Department of Health.

Both deaths happened before the most recent 24-hour reporting period, but have only now been included in the department's statistics.

It brings the death toll from the virus recorded by the department to 2,077.

A further 144 positive cases were also recorded in the last day after 1,050 individuals were tested.

There were 220 patients in the north's hospitals yesterday who had tested positive for the virus, down from 334 patients a week ago.

Figures also revealed that there were 35 patients in intensive care and 25 requiring ventilation.

Hospitals were operating yesterday at 90 per cent capacity.

A total of 18 care homes are dealing with Covid outbreaks.

The average seven-day infection rate per 100,000 people in Northern Ireland is now 65.

As of Monday, a total of 631,654 Covid vaccines had been administered in Northern Ireland, of which 588,803 were first doses and 42,851 were second doses.

In the Republic, there were no deaths connected to Covid-19 reported last night.

A further 437 cases of the virus were confirmed.

There were 418 patients with coronavurus in hospital, of whom 103 were in intensive care units.

Education and health authorities yesterday gave the green light for the phased reopening of schools to proceed as planned.

All primary school and fifth year students will return to class next week, after younger primary classes and Leaving Certificate students returned last week.
