A MAN charged with possessing the gun police believe was used in the shooting of the journalist Lyra McKee has failed in a bid to get his bail varied.

Niall Sheerin (28) of Tyrconnell Street in Derry is charged with possessing a. 22 pistol with intent to endanger life and in suspicious circumstances on dates between September 12 2018 and June 5 2020.

At today's hearing Sheerin's solicitor applied to vary the bail so that Sheerin could sign on fewer occasions.

He said that another man charged with the murder only had to sign three times a week and requested that Sheerin's bail conditions be varied accordingly.

However, Deputy District Judge Liam McStay said that if the High Court felt it necessary to impose a signing condition on Sheerin that he signs every day it was not for him to override that. The case was adjourned until March 4.
