SINN Féin is to meet police over the recent arrest in Derry of a 14-year-old boy with special needs.

The teenager was arrested during a police raid on his family’s home in the Creggan area of the city on Monday.

It is understood the child’s father is a member of anti-agreement party Saoradh.

Foyle MLA Karen Mullen said her party will meet police this week.

“A party delegation will meet the PSNI this week to directly raise concerns about reports of heavy-handed policing during a recent police search in the city in which a 14-year-old child with special needs was arrested and subsequently released,” she said.

“This vulnerable child has been very badly affected by his ordeal.”

She added that the “public rightly expects the very highest policing and human rights standards and we will hold the police to account when their actions fail to meet those standards”.

Saoradh spokesman Paddy Gallagher said the raid was linked to a voluntary £1 lottery organised to raise funds for republican prisoners.

“Home invasions, raids, stop and searches are all common occurrences for republicans,” he said.

“However, in recent weeks there has been a notable increase in the targeting of family members.”

Chief Superintendent Emma Bond said “accountability to both the public and the relevant oversight bodies... are at the heart of our policing with the community approach”.

“Protecting the public and keeping people safe is and will always be our priority and we welcome the opportunity to meet with Sinn Féin representatives to discuss this matter and any other concerns they wish to express,” she said.
