TWO men were assaulted with a tyre iron in an attack which police are investigating as a possible homophobic hate crime.

It happened in the early hours of yesterday at a house in the Lough Road area of Lurgan.

Shortly after midnight, it was reported that several people were in the house when an altercation occurred.

One man left the property before returning with another. They then threatened two men and assaulted them with a tyre iron.

The suspects fled in a black Audi car and made off towards William Street.

The victims were treated for injuries which are not thought to be serious. Damage was also caused to a front door and hallway.

A 26-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of threats to kill and aggravated burglary with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.

He yesterday remained in police custody.

An inspector said: "At this stage, one line of enquiry is that this may be a homophobic hate crime. Enquiries are continuing."

Police appealed for anyone with information to phone them on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
