Young child in house targeted in pipe bomb attack

A young child and a couple in their 20s escaped injury when a pipe bomb exploded in the back garden of their home in Derry.

Police were called to Lincoln Courts in the city’s Waterside after the device exploded at around 1am yesterday.

Detective Sergeant Richard Donnell, who described it as a "reckless act", said officers found the remains of the pipe bomb at the scene.

He said a man and a woman in their 20s and a young child were inside the property but all were unharmed and there was no damage reported.

The object was taken away for further forensic examination.

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood described it as an attack on the entire community.

“Those responsible for this pipe bomb could have caused tragedy for people in this city. They don’t care about people here; their only goal is to create chaos and crisis," he said.

Sinn Féin councillor Sandra Duffy – chair of Derry’s policing partnership – said people were "shocked and disgusted that these types of attacks are continuing".

"This violence stands in stark contrast to the great community spirit shown by people across this city who protected our elderly and most vulnerable residents during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic," she said.

DUP assembly member Gary Middleton also condemed the attack and urged anyone with information to bring it to police.
