BELFAST is the second worst city in the UK for roadworks, according to new research.

Data collated over the past three years reveals that Belfast ranks among the top 10 UK’s roadwork capitals.

The research, which was based on Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to councils, reveals that there were 78,628 roadworks recorded in the city, excluding London.

Top of the list for the most roadworks was Liverpool, which recorded a 125,398. The number of works in the city has steadily risen in the last three years, where a major overhaul to its roads has been ongoing since 2018.

Third on the list behind Belfast was Bristol with 75,855.

The research, which was carried out by Little Loans, saw FOI requests submitted to the councils of the UK’s most populated towns and cities, asking them to provide the number of roadworks carried out in the 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19 financial years.

In Belfast, the highest number of roadworks was carried out in 2016/17 when there were 36,150 recorded in the city, while there were 23,196 in the following year and 19,282 roadworks in 2018/19
