Detectives investigating the murder of gangland boss Robbie Lawlor in north Belfast last week have made a further appeal about a car believed to have been used by the killer.

Lawlor, 36, was shot dead in the garden of a house in Etna Drive at around 11.50am last Saturday as he tried to escape the lone gunman.

The Dublin criminal is thought to have been staying in Belfast in the days prior to his murder.

He was shot a number of times at close range, the gun used has not been recovered.

Having made connection with Belfast based criminals the gangland criminal was said to have been a regular visitor to the city, where he believed he was safe from Dublin rivals he was involved in a bloody feud with.

Lawlor had previously been linked with the murder of teenager Keane Mulready Woods in Co Louth in January.

The teenage gang member's body was dismembered and parts discovered at two separate locations in Dublin's Northside.

Detectives returned to the house in Etna Drive in Ardoyne on Friday to carry our further searches of the property.

The house, where Lawlor had been prior to the murder has been subject to extensive forensic examination.

A 36-year-old north Belfast man, thought to have been an eye witness to the killing, was arrested earlier this week and later released on bail pending further enquiries.

Two men, aged 30 and 33, and a 17-year-old boy thought to be from Limerick, were released without charge.

A 27-year-old man who had also been arrested from an address in Co Antrim was released on Monday.

Police have asked the public for information about a white Volkswagen Sirocco car, registration YLZ 7052, which was discovered burnt out in nearby Kingston Court the day of the murder.

The car, stolen in the Republic on January 30, was parked in Estoril Park in Ardoyne the day before the murder, on Friday April 3 at 10am.

Detective Chief Inspector Peter Montgomery said: "My investigation into this brutal killing is progressing and I would like to thank those who have come forward with information so far".

Mr Montgomery appealed for anyone who saw it or witnessed the movements of the Sirocco "between March 31 and Friday, April 3 in Estoril Park until it was found burnt out on Saturday at approximately midday in Kingston Court to speak to me".

"Did you see anyone park it there or move it to Kingston Court? I would also appeal to any motorists or taxi drivers who were in the area at that time and have dashcam footage to please bring it forward to police", he said.

"I am still keen to hear from anyone who saw this car and its occupants either before 11.50am on Saturday April 4 or after the murder had taken place.

"I am also interested in speaking to anyone who was in the Etna Drive or Strathroy Park areas on Saturday, April 4 and again if any drivers or taxi drivers have dashcam footage during those times I would urge them to bring it police.

"This was a horrific and callous murder, carried out in close range and in broad daylight, and those involved need to be removed from the streets and our communities.

"At this stage, I believe that a single gunman was involved in the killing, firing multiple shots at the victim and striking him a number of times".
