A Stormont department has said it has not issued a letter asking the executive to front up another £33 million for Casement Park.

The projected cost of the GAA stadium plan in west Belfast has risen from an original budget of around £77m to £110m.

Stormont originally allocated around £62m with the GAA providing £15m, but the GAA says it has no plans to increase its contribution to help plug the funding shortfall.

Casement's redevelopment was pledged alongside major upgrades to Belfast sports grounds for soccer and rugby as part of the Regional Stadia Programme.

Sinn Féin communities minister Deirdre Hargey gave an update on the funding position in response to an assembly question from UUP MLA Andy Allen.

She said: "If the Casement project budget increase is approved by the executive, this would increase the total Regional Stadia Programme budget from £129m to £162m."

The GAA first announced it wanted to build a major new stadium more than a decade ago, but the redevelopment project has faced numerous setbacks.

Revised plans were submitted in February 2017 with a reduced spectator capacity of around 34,000. The proposal is still being assessed by planning officials.

Mr Allen, a member of the communities committee, told BBC Radio Ulster's Nolan Show that Casement "should be delivered within its original budget".

The Department for Communities (DfC) yesterday denied that Ms Hargey had issued a letter asking for more funding.

"The minister has not issued a letter asking the executive for a further £33m for Casement Park," a spokeswoman said last night.

"The minister did reply to Andy Allen MLA in response to his Assembly Question. This explained that 'the delays to the redevelopment of Casement Park have increased the current project cost estimate, which is currently in the region of £110m. This is £33m higher than the approved project budget of £77m.'"

On Monday, Sinn Féin finance minister Conor Murphy said Stormont's budget was around £600m short of the basic requirements put forward by departments – excluding commitments made in the New Decade, New Approach deal.

Sinn Féin West Belfast MP Paul Maskey said the stadium project will "enhance Gaelic games throughout Antrim, Ulster and indeed across the island".

He said the capital funding for Casement is "specific to infrastructure projects and should not be confused with other funding".

SDLP MLA Justin McNulty, a former GAA All-Ireland winner, said a redeveloped Casement "will be a huge asset for our community".

He added that the capital funding is "ring-fenced to infrastructure projects and should not be confused with funds for pressures in other public services".
