A 37-year-old man has been remanded back into custody after he admitted possessing a gun, ammunition and drugs.

Kevin McGuigan appeared at Belfast Crown Court where he was charged with seven offences dating back to last June.

He pleaded guilty to four of the charges and denied a further three.

McGuigan, with an address at Botanic Avenue in the south of the city, admitted possession of a firearm, namely a selective/ automatic pistol, with intent to cause fear of violence on June 16 2019.

He also admitted possessing ammunition on the same date, namely 9mm calibre cartridges with FMJ round-nose bullets, without holding a firearms certificate.

In addition, McGuigan admitted possessing the Class A drug cocaine and Class C drug Temazepam on the same date.

He entered 'not guilty' pleas to possessing the same weapon together with ammunition in a public place, and also possessing a handgun without holding a firearms certificate.

A 'not guilty' plea was also entered to the charge of 'being a person sentenced to imprisonment for a term of three months or more but less than three years, in breach of the prohibition imposed by Article 63(2) of the Firearms (Northern Ireland) Order 2004, had in your possession a firearm before the expiration of the period of eight years from the date of your conviction'.

Defence barrister John O'Connor asked Judge Neil Rafferty if his client's case be listed again today.

He said that in light of the three not guilty pleas, this would allow a little extra time "for consideration in this case".

Judge Rafferty agreed to this request and then addressed the defendant, telling him the Crown had 24 hours to decide whether the pleas he entered satisfied the prosecution or whether he will be put to trial for the charges he denied.

"We'll be back tomorrow, when we'll hopefully get this resolved together. Either way, your pleas have been noted," he said.
