NAOMI Long has now added justice minister to a rapidly-expanding CV which has already taken in councillor, MLA, MP, MEP and Alliance leader.

Her popularity with the centre ground electorate has previously made the East Belfast assembly member a target of a DUP machine nervous about electoral threats.

While we await further government action on the thorny issue of the legacy of the Troubles, her in box will largely be taken up with policing, court and probation matters.

The deal which restored Stormont includes undertakings for PSNI numbers to increase by 600 to the 7,500 envisaged in the original Patten reforms, and Ms Long (48) has already met the chief constable.

However, with the Catholic primate calling for a return to 50/50 recruitment and Simon Byrne also highlighting under-representation from other groups, overseeing the expansion will require careful handling.

The minister's prospects will hinge on the scale of any demand for budget cuts which made her Alliance predecessor David Ford's job so challenging.
