Archdeacon David McClay, the rector of Willowfield parish in Belfast, was yesterday confirmed as the next Church of Ireland Bishop of Down and Dromore.
The Church's House of Bishops made the decision during a meeting in Dublin.
The bishop-designate's consecration is expected to take place in St Anne's Cathedral in January.
