A BELFAST MP has said he is "pleased" the Department of Health has taken on board concerns about a controversial appointment.

Gavin Robinson was commenting on an announcement that a former senior manager at Muckamore Abbey Hospital will no longer be taking up a post with the department.

Esther Rafferty, service manager of hospital services with Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, had been seconded to the post of Mental Capacity Act trainer.

She had been due to begin the job yesterday but the decision was reversed after objections from members of the Parents & Friends of Muckamore Abbey group.

Mr Robinson said a number of family members had connected him about the issue and he was pleased "the Department of Health have taken on board the concerns of family members".

Secretary of the group Brigene McNeilly had written to Richard Pengelly, permanent secretary at the department, after she heard about the planned job move.

She also attended a meeting at Stormont where it was announced the secondment had been halted.

Muckamore Abbey Hospital has been at the centre of a police inquiry into alleged physical and mental abuse of vulnerable patients.

Last week Detective PSNI Chief Inspector Jill Duffie said the probe was the "largest adult safeguarding case" of its kind within the Northern Ireland police service.
