A victim of paedophile priest Malachy Finegan has said the Diocese of Dromore has shown a "lack of compassion" over its handling of survivors' concerns.

A solicitor for the victims wrote to the diocese in March last year to ask that a 'Coat of Arms' mosaic tribute to Bishop Francis Brooks be removed from Newry Cathedral over claims he failed to take action against Finegan.

However, the solicitor, Claire McKeegan of Phoenix Law, has said she has received no "substantive response" from the diocese since survivors' concerns were first raised.

She has now written to Archbishop Eamon Martin to request an urgent meeting.

Archbishop Martin was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Dromore in April this year.

At least 12 young boys were sexually abused by Finegan while he taught at St Colman's College between 1967 and 1987. Many more were physically abused by the priest.

He went on to carry out further serious sexual abuse while he was parish priest in Hilltown in the early 1990s.

Bishop Brooks, who died in September 2010, sent Finegan to England for 'treatment' in 1994 instead of reporting him to police after being informed of the abuse.

In her letter to Archbishop Martin, Ms McKeegan said victims had been disappointed by lack of response from the diocese over their concerns about the mosaic.

"There has been no satisfactory response whatsoever in over a year and our clients are growing in their distress and upset," she said.

"The matter we were told two weeks ago was the subject of meetings and a response should issue and still no reply has been received.

"Our clients were hopeful that matters would be dealt with quickly under the direction and guidance of the Archbishop."

She said the issue "could have been easily resolved and yet the silence from the Church has been utterly unacceptable and disappointing especially given the grave context of the situation".

Survivor Paul Gilmore said the diocese had shown a "lack of compassion" for victims and survivors who were abused by Finegan.

"Despite the apologies and the fall-out from yet another scandal in the Catholic Church where multiple children were abused, the reaction of church leaders on this issue has been silence," he said.

He added: "One must question why it is so difficult to remove a few tiles from a floor if it could assist the survivors that it offends so greatly."

A spokesman for the Diocese of Dromore said the Archbishop is "reviewing this matter and had given directions to take the review forward".

In March 2018, Dr John McAreavey stood down as Bishop of Dromore after it emerged he celebrated Mass alongside Finegan despite knowing he was a paedophile.

Earlier this year, he backed calls for an independent public inquiry into the abuse claims.
