Sinn Fein dominant in Mid-Ulster

Sinn Féin once again asserted its dominance in an area that has traditionally been a key battleground.

With 17 seats, the party continues to be the largest in the mainly nationalists council area.

Overall the SDLP saw its share of the vote rise as it managed to hold on to its six sitting councillors.

The DUP also saw its percentage increase as it grabbed an extra seat in Magherafelt at the expense of veteran UUP councillor George Shiels.

Counting got off the brisk start at the Meadowbank Arena in Magherafelt and Sinn Féin’s Darren Totten was the first declared early in the day.

As results tumbled in it became clear that there would be little change in the district, which covers an area from the border to the Sperrin Mountains.

In Dungannon town independent republican Barry Monteith again comfortably retained his seat.

A previous poll topper, this time around the Dungannon man had carved up the district with fellow independent Niall Bowen as part of an ambiguous bid to get two independents returned. However, Mr Bowen’s 345 first-preference votes soon saw him eliminated.

The SDLP Denise Mullen held off a charge from Sinn Féin to retain her seat. The high-profile councillor had been viewed by some as vulnerable, especially after Mr Bowen’s entry.

In the Torrent ward Ian McCrea – a son of former MP the Rev William McCrea – was attempting to make a political comeback but his efforts were held off by sitting UUP councillor Robert Colvin.

Dan Kerr’s victory in an electoral area that takes in Michelle O’Neill’s home town of Coalisland means there are now two independent republican councillors in east Tyrone.

The SDLP’s Malachy Quinn topped the poll in the district with 1631 votes.

Observers had been keeping a close eye on the Carntogher district electoral area where anti-abortion party Aontú had entered the contest through Irish language activist Pádraigin Ui Raifeartaigh.

Its bid for success failed to materialise as she recorded just 632 first-preference votes.

The DUP had a significant success with Kyle Black, whose father David was shot dead by the ‘IRA’ in 2012, taking a seat.
