TWO hundred teenage girls from all over Ireland are expected to attend an event in Derry designed to encourage them to take up careers in technology.
The Monster Confidence event, at Derry’s Millennium Forum, was organised in response to the underrepresentation of women in `stem' (science, technology, engineering and maths) related employment.
Recent research revealed that only one in five technology jobs in the UK are currently held by women while just over one in 10 women pursue stem degrees at university.
Organiser of today's event, Stemettes was established to use women already working in the sector to inspire other young women to follow them through panel events, exhibitions and mentoring schemes.
Those attending the event will be able to take part in speed mentoring with volunteers as well as undertaking mock interviews with HR and recruitment volunteers. There will also be panel discussions on career building and demonstrations showcasing innovations such as virtual reality.
An address will be given by Derry tech entrepreneur, Mary McKenna while Pricewaterhouse Cooper and Allstate will also exhibit at the event which opens at 9.30am.
