AN AUSTRALIAN actress who played Madge Bishop in Neighbours has lent her support to the families of those killed in the Ballymurphy Massacre.

Anne Charleston, best known for her role in the popular Australian soap opera, live streamed a message from a rally in support of the families in Melbourne on Saturday.

Organised by the Melbourne Ballymurphy Massacre Support Group, the rally was addressed by Brian McKerr, the grandson of massacre victim John McKerr.

Flares were lit as the names of the victims were read out.

It comes as a fresh inquest into the deaths is due to begin today in Belfast.

Ten people died during three days of shootings involving members of the Parachute Regiment in west Belfast in 1971, while another man died of a heart attack following an alleged violent confrontation with the troops.

In 2011 Attorney General John Larkin directed that new inquests be heard after a long campaign by family members, who claimed the original probes by the coroner's office in the aftermath of the shootings were inadequate.

In a post on Facebook, Ms Charleston said: "Hello everyone in Ballymurphy. This is Anne Charleston speaking to you from Melbourne, where as you can see there is a groundswell of support for this inquest.
