MPs have launched an inquiry into a government consultation on proposals to address the legacy of the Troubles.

The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee yesterday announced details of the

inquiry, which aims to examine the scope of the consultation to ensure it meets the needs of victims and survivors.

Legacy commitments were made in the Stormont House Agreement in 2014 after talks between the north’s main political parties.

It proposed the creation of a Historical Investigations Unit, an Independent Commission on Information Retrieval, an independent Oral History Archive and an Implementation and Reconciliation Group.

However, a consultation process on establishing the legacy institutions was only launched earlier this month.

The committee said the Northern Ireland Office has excluded several elements of the agreement from the consultation, including measures on victim support services, because they will be carried out by a Stormont Executive.

Chairman Dr Andrew Murrison said: “We must ensure that the consultation is asking the right questions, covers the right issues and will result in meaningful contributions from all quarters.

“We also want to ensure that the timetable for the implementation of any changes is clear and that there will be opportunities for engagement throughout," said the Conservative MP.

“Our inquiry will give people another route to give their views and will help to form our contribution to the consultation.”
