AN investigation was launched yesterday following the death of a man at Belfast Harbour estate.

The victim, named locally as Neil Rooney, a father from Ballyhornan in Co Down, is understood to have become trapped under machinery in the Stormont Wharf area yesterday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at McCaughey Road shortly before 8.30am.

A rapid response crew, A&E crew and doctor attended, but it is understood Mr Rooney died at the scene.

A spokesperson for Belfast Harbour last night confirmed that the Health and Safety Executive attended the scene following the fatality.

Few details were known about the incident but reports suggested that Mr Rooney may have become trapped under machinery as he worked.

A spokesperson for Belfast Harbour said it could only "confirm that there was an incident this morning on Stormont Wharf and that a fatality has occurred".

"The Health and Safety Executive is at the scene and next of kin have been informed," he added.

A spokeswoman for the Fire and Rescue Service said they received a call at 8.20am yesterday and fire appliances from Whitla and Central Fire Stations attended the scene.

An ambulance service spokesman also said: "The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service was called at 08:19 this morning to Stormont Wharf, Belfast following reports of a person trapped.

"One rapid response vehicle, one doctor, one A&E crew and a hazardous area response officer attended.

"No-one has been conveyed from the scene."
