POLICE in Co Armagh are appealing for information following a "serious sexual assault" on a woman in a lay-by on Thursday evening.

The attack took place in the Tannaghmore North Road area of Lurgan at around 6.30pm.

The assailant is described by police as being aged between 30 to 40 years, with a beard and is said to have spoken with a local Lurgan accent.

He was over 5ft 5ins and was wearing a dark hoodie and dark trousers at the time.

Sinn Féin Upper Bann MLA Catherine Seeley urged anyone with information "no matter how insignificant it may appear" to speak to police.

"We must ensure the attacker is taken off the streets and faces the full force of the law," she said.

Anyone with information was asked to contact detectives at the Rape Crime Unit on the non-emergency number 101 or provide information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
