HOMES were evacuated as crews battled a blaze in east Belfast.

Around 45 firefighters were called to Upper Braniel Road after a fire broke out in outbuildings at around 2.50pm.

The fire then spread to an adjoining semi-detached house which has been left badly damaged. Crews fought for several hours to bring the fire under control.

The area was cordoned off and people living nearby evacuated.

The Upper Braniel Road was expected to remain closed overnight.
