A GIANT Christmas card was last night used by campaigners to seek public backing for the introduction of same-sex marriage legislation.
Activists from the 'Love Equality' campaign group unveiled the 'Big Gay Christmas Card' in Belfast's Cornmarket and urged shoppers to register a signature of support.
People were also offered the opportunity to record video messages explaining why they support same-sex marriage in an event staged as part of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Festival.
The group said it hopes the message will "reach all the way to Stormont through the use of selfies and social media".
Proposals to introduce same-sex marriage have been defeated in the assembly on five occasions.
John O’Doherty of the Love Equality campaign said: "Christmas is a time for families, for celebrating the time that we spend together and reflecting on the past year. We want to spread a message of equality and inclusion this Christmas.
"That is why we are asking people to get involved in the campaign for marriage equality and make a big impact by signing our huge Christmas card to ask Santa to bring us marriage equality for Christmas."
