THOUSANDS of pounds of damage has been caused to a bowling club in north Belfast targeted for the third time in 18 months.

A lone intruder wearing sports socks to cover his hands damaged front doors, shutters, tills and stole around £1,500 worth of alcohol during the break-in at Cliftonville Bowling Club at Knutsford Drive.

It is believed the man entered and exited the premises at around 6.30am on Wednesday via an adjoining wall with Solitude, the ground of Cliftonville Football Club.

Kevin O'Neill, from the bowling club, said they have asked Solitude to secure the wall.

"We are a small outfit and it has put us under a lot of financial pressure," he said.

Police said premises in the Cliftonville Street area were also entered sometime between 4am and 6am, although nothing was taken. A spokesman appealed for information.
