NI WATER has advised members of the public to avoid cooling down in reservoirs, quarries and other bodies of water that could prove to be dangerous.

Together with The Quarry Products Association NI, the company aims to remind people of the danger beneath the surface of bodies of water that are not usually open for public access.

Michael Bergin, Health and Safety Manager at NI Water, said that although a reservoir can look like the perfect place to cool down on a warm day, it can prove to be very dangerous.

“You may swim well in a warm indoor pool, but that does not mean that you will be able to swim in cold water,” he said.

He also warned that reservoirs could be much deeper than a swimmer might expect, can prove difficult to get out of and may contain strong underwater currents, hidden debris or underwater hazards.

“A quick dip really can lead to a quick death, so stay safe,” Mr Bergin said.

Gordon Best, Chief Executive of The Quarry Products Association NI, said that the company was please to work with NI Water in the promotion of cold water safety.

“We appeal to everyone to recognise the dangers and take care around cold water,” he said.

“A swim or a dip in a reservoir, quarry or lake may seem like a great idea, particularly on a very warm day, but it could all end in tragedy.  Don’t take the risk.’
