CLONARD Monastery has changed session times of its annual Solemn Novena following the results of a survey.

The nine-day "festival of faith" at the west Belfast monastery runs between June 15 and 23 this year.

Up to 20,000 people are expected to attend the 10 daily sessions, which take place from early morning until late at night.

There had been concerns that the most popular session, held at 8pm, had become overcrowded.

Clonard has now altered the schedule to have one at 7.30pm and another at 9pm.

It also said previous times did not allow priests and volunteers on duty to get a decent break between the morning and evening sessions.

During weekdays, an early afternoon session will be held at 12.45pm and next will be at 4.30pm.

The annual devotion consists of special prayers and services over nine days. The theme of next month's Novena is 'Icon of Mercy'.

This year also marks the 150th anniversary of the Redemptorists' special mission of making the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help known throughout the world.

Clonard held a "Novena on the streets" earlier this month which saw pilgrims gather each night for prayer and the offering of petitions around an icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
