Derry murder victim named as Gerard Quinn (24)

THE man who died following an altercation in Derry last night has been named as 24-year-old Gerard Quinn.

Mr Quinn was assaulted during an altercation on Milldale Crescent in the Currynierin area of the city at around 10.25pm.

Politicians said a house party descended into violence and the victim may have been stabbed in the neck with a bottle.

A post-mortem is to take place tomorrow to establish the cause of his death.

Another 24-year-old man received head injuries in the incident, but his injuries were not life threatening.

Friends described Mr Quinn as "funny and kind" on tributes posted on social media.

Emma Dobbins said: "Can't get my head round it Gerard Quinn.

"So funny n kind. I will never forget this night."

Agnes Miroslawska said he always made her laugh.

"I'm still in shock. I really can't believe it. It's soooo sad to see another young life taken far too soon.

"Thinking of your family at this really sad time."

Sinn Fein Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said the death of this young man in these circumstances was a tragedy that had shocked the local area.

"There is a live police investigation into this incident and that should be allowed to go ahead.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the man who was killed at this difficult time."

A 16-year-old boy is being questioned at Strand Road police station after being arrested shortly after midnight.

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey thanked the local community for their support in the investigation.

"We have had an excellent response with a good number of people coming forward providing us with important information which is vital in assisting us with our enquiries."
