FOUR people have escaped injury in an early-morning arson attack on a house in Derry.

Police said old furniture appeared to have been deliberately placed against the front door of the property and set alight, blocking the doorway.

The front of the home in Drumard Park was badly damaged by the blaze, which police were alerted to on Tuesday at about 3am.

All four residents - three women aged 61, 54 and 29, and a 37-year-old man - managed to escape through the back door after being wakened by their smoke alarm.

Police are investigating the incident. Detective Sergeant Brian Reid said a motive for the incident has not yet been established.
