A TWO-day celebration of Ireland's 1916 Easter Rising due to take place in the European Parliament in Brussels today and tomorrow has been cancelled due to the terror attacks.

A series of events were to include historical and political hearings, a concert of Irish music, dramatic re-enactments and a presentation of a copy of the 1916 Proclamation of Independence.

The joint hosts were Sinn Féin MEPs, Martina Anderson, Lynn Boylan, Matt Carthy and Liadh Ní Riada, with more than 120 people due to attend from across Ireland, including relatives of 1916 leaders, musicians, artists and historians.

However, 88 visitors flying in to Brussels had their flight re-routed to Amsterdam's Schipol airport in the neighbouring Netherlands.

Dozens more being escorted from Belfast by Ms Anderson only got as far as the Eurostar in London when news of the explosions filtered through.

They were at Gatwick hours later waiting for flights back to Ireland.

A Sinn Féin spokeswoman said it was too early to say if it would be re-arranged for a later date.
