Police are investigating an un-notified “parade” following a pro-Palestine vigil which was addressed by SDLP leader Colum Eastwood among others.

The procession from Derry’s Diamond to Guildhall Square on Wednesday followed a vigil in support of Palestinians coming under fire from Israeli forces in Rafah.

PSNI Chief Superintendent Gillian Kearney said that following the vigil, participants made their way onto the road and onto Shipquay Street.

“Police immediately issued verbal warnings to make participants aware they would be taking part in an unnotified procession/parade. Participants continued and made their way to Guildhall Square.”

She said organisers were required to give formal notification of their intentions to hold a procession and submit appropriate documentation to the Parades Commission.

“The required documentation was not submitted. An investigation is underway,” she added.

In December, it was revealed that Mr Eastwood and some Bloody Sunday family members were being investigated over their participation in a walk to Derry’s courthouse for a hearing of the Soldier F case. The SDLP leader was asked to attend Strand Road PSNI station but walked out when he was left waiting. He later branded the incident a “total farce”.

The SDLP has been approached for comment.
