THE all-female line-up to present RTÉ's flagship news programme took to the airwaves last night in their new roles.

Broadcasters Keelin Shanely and Caitríona Perry took their places to present the Six One News - the first time there has been two permanent female presenters on the programme.

Both experienced journalists, Ms Shanely has presented News at One on RTÉ Radio 1 and Crimecall on RTÉ One, while Ms Perry had been based in the United States since 2013.

A Today FM and Newstalk veteran, Ms Perry came to wider attention last year when US President Donald Trump was filmed beckoning her in the Oval Office while he was speaking to newly elected taoiseach, Leo Varadkar. She has also written a book on the rise of President Trump.

The full-time roles taken on by the two women were most recently held by Bryan Dobson and Sharon Ni Bheolain.
