SDLP's Daniel McCrossan branded closure of RHI scheme as a 'sellout'

A FORMER SDLP MLA who has become an outspoken critic of the Renewable Heat Incentive project accused the DUP and Sinn Féin of a "sellout" when they closed the scheme to new applications.

Daniel McCrossan made the remark in a tweet posted last February when the scheme was closed amidst concerns over the levels of expenditure involved.

He wrote: "@sinnfeinireland and @duponline sellout re #RHI hope they can explain their decision to the many people and businesses losing out".

In a further statement released at the time of the closure, Mr McCrossan also accused then Enterprise Minister Jonathan Bell of being "intent on creating a call-centre economy".

Mr McCrossan said: "DETI has specialised in low-skill job creation and massive job losses particularly in manufacturing. Throughout the North this move has been forecast to cost 2,000 jobs in an industry that employs graduates and skilled workers. Minister Bell seems intent on creating a call-centre economy.

"The SDLP will be strong in our opposition to a decision that will only put people on the dole queue and businesses into administration."

The remarks are in contrast to comments made in October by Mr McCrossan at a hearing of Stormont's Public Accounts Committee, when members quizzed the regulator administering the scheme, the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem).

Mr McCrossan said: "This is public money - we can hardly afford a health service and now we are having to fork out for this. Utterly ridiculous.

"At which point did you realise this was going to blow up in everybody's faces, that this was going to cost an unprecedented amount of money and is probably one of the biggest scandals that we will face here since the powers were devolved?"

The SDLP did not respond to a request for comment.
