Derry and Strabane council calls on traders to boycott The Sun newspaper

COUNCILLORS in Derry and Strabane have voted to call on shopkeepers in the district to stop selling The Sun newspaper.

A cross party selection of councillors back the motion tabled by independent Strabane representative Paul Gallagher at a meeting this week.

The motion called on “all retailers and vendors of newspapers within the district to request that they stop selling the tabloid The Sun”.

The motion was carried by 27 votes in favour with just one against while several councillors, believed to be unionists, abstained.

The Sun is disliked in Liverpool because of untrue claims it printed about Hillsborough disaster victims, however, it remains one of the best selling newspapers in the north.

Mr Gallagher encouraged retailers to boycott the paper.

“Since I can remember this paper has produced lies after lies after lies,” he claimed.

“Let's not allow ourselves to be fooled and rid this rag from existence.”

A Spokesman for The Sun said: "We are astonished that in Derry - a city that has prided itself on its association with civil liberties and free speech - some elected politicians think it's appropriate to push such extreme censorship on its citizens and retailers."
