IRISH stars Michael Fassbender and Saoirse Ronan are on the red carpet for tonight's Bafta awards at London's Royal Albert Hall.

On Kate Winslet, Kerryman Fassbender said: "She's very generous and also really a leader - making sure everyone's doing well and getting some rest."

Winslet explained that the stress of the role in Steve Jobs had caused Fassbender to lose weight.

She said: "I felt like I had to look after him... I would watch him get thinner and thinner. I would keep trying to push chips towards him."

Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, wearing Burberry, said: "I am freezing. I am so cold."

Ronan, who is nominated in the Best Actress category for her film Brooklyn - which sees her character move from Ireland to New York - said: "It was really strange that there was no separation in her journey compared to mine."

Brooklyn, the Irish immigrant drama, was named outstanding British film.

Boyega said: "Do you know what's so weird... I still have the separation between the Star Wars world and my own life."

On filming Star Wars Episode VIII, he said he was due to start filming on Monday - with a 6am pickup.

Referring to new Star Wars director Rian Johnson, he said: "Rian has my heart already. He definitely deserves to take the helm after the great JJ Abrams."

Kate Winslet won the best supporting actress award for her performance in Steve Jobs, the biopic on Apple's co-founder.

Collecting her third Bafta, Winslet, 40, hailed director Danny Boyle as "amazing" to work with and called the film's lead star Fassbender "an extraordinary actor".

She also mentioned her husband Ned Rocknroll, saying: "Hi babe, happy Valentine's day."

Fellow British star Mark Rylance was named best supporting actor for his role as a Russian spy in Bridge Of Spies.

The film's director Steven Spielberg collected the award on his behalf as Rylance is performing in the off-Broadway play Nice Fish.

Presenting the award, Australian actress Rebel Wilson had a dig at the Oscars diversity row.

She said: "Idris Elba you're making me nervous... I'm sociologically programmed to want chocolate on Valentine's Day."

Eddie Redmayne, who is in the running for Best Actor for his role as transgender pioneer Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, said his rival nominee Leonardo DiCaprio was "an amazing guy".

DiCaprio, who was also on the red carpet, is a frontrunner for his role as Hugh Glass in The Revenant.

Fans hope he will pick up his first Bafta Award after four nominations, which would lend more weight to his bid for his first Oscar later this month.

Asked by red carpet host Zoe Ball whose performance he had loved this year, Redmayne said: "I love Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant."

Rating his own chances of winning the Best Actor Bafta for a second year in a row, he said: "I doubt it very much but I'm thrilled to be invited."

Redmayne won last year with his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything.

Looking back on attending the ceremony in 2015, he said: "I suppose it all felt pretty new to me last year. But there's still an adrenaline buzz."

Protesters who are part of a group called Creatives of Colour Network held up Bafta masks as they staged a "peaceful" demonstration at the junction of Russell Street and Bow Street in London, ahead of the Film Awards, against what it describes as a lack of diversity in front of the camera.
